A new hedge being laid. Very difficult to pinpoint exactly where - possibly the hedge between Beacon and Bloomer's fields. How bare it all looks!
The hedge down the side of Jenner's Field, outside the Butterfly Garden. It has been freshly laid - this ancient art is a way of making a hedge grow thicker and more densely.
Preparing the uprights which are then used in the hedge-laying process. The actual hedging plants are partially cut through and then interwoven through the uprights to form a thick barrier.
The relatively new hedge between Beacon and Bloomer's fields.
The completed job. The hedging plants are not killed by this process but are encouraged to produce plentiful new growth which grows through and above the angled stems.
The finished article - what a great job! This photograph was taken in 1999
Planting the original hedge. This is the top of Bloomer's field, looking towards Jenners. I don't have a date, but guess it would have been around 1994-5. These are the plants that have been laid in the photographs taken in 1999.
Laying the hedge down the side of Jenner's
Shaving uprights. Careful with that axe!
This is one of the original barbed wire fences which were through the original site of the reserve. To replace the one between Bloomer's and Beacon fields with native hedging used 2,100 plants!
Laying drainage pipes down either side of the path through the Wildflower Meadow. One of these can still be seen emerging into the ditch at the top of Beacon Field - but I've never seen any water coming out of it...
Phil Edwards with trusty digger. I think this is making improvements to the track in the vicinity of the allotments in 2000.
Building the path through the Wildflower Meadow. 2000.
Laying the path through to the car-park.
I believe this to be the gate between the Community Orchard and Wildflower Meadow, again photographed around 2000 - it isn't there now...
Track Improvements 2000. Anyone know who the people are?
Digging out the foundation for a new path.
Some fairly heavy duty kit - has Julie got her license?
The new track through the Community Orchard nearing completion.
Some willing helpers. Unfortunately I don't have any names or dates.
The very nice sign that used to point the way to the Community Orchard - sadly it is no more.
This was the main access point to the Community Orchard before the new paths were built - just a muddy track.
